The City of South Bend, in collaboration with local neighborhood groups, will install a traffic calming project in the 1000 block of West Washington Street starting on Wednesday, June 5. During this time West Washington Street will be closed to through traffic between Walnut and Chapin Streets. Local access will be maintained during this closure.
The project involves the installation of temporary bumpouts and crosswalks to make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street. A key component of this project will be the installation of asphalt art by local artist, Chris Silva.
The asphalt art or street art will be installed in front of the Indiana University South Bend’s Civil Rights Heritage Center and the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Civic Innovation, both of which are located across from each another on Washington Street. The artwork is expected to draw attention to the pedestrian crossing and calm traffic.
The project is expected to be completed by Sunday, June 9, weather permitting. Detour route for the closure will be Walnut Street and Chapin Street via Colfax Avenue.

I predict that this “traffic calming” project will do exactly the opposite. The traffic flow restrictions being implemented will create traffic jams and angry motorists. Those detours may become the new permanent traffic flow as everyone avoids the area which will piss off everyone in the newly jammed streets.

I know, let’s take tax payer money to implement one way streets, then turn them into two way streets with roundabouts, how about some smart streets and then some bump outs and street art? You libs are suckers for con men (or fellow travelers), must be great party throwers. I’m sure that pithy street art is just going to make traffic FLOW!!! Idiots.
