LaPorte man arrested for OWI related charges after deadly crash on State Road 2

A LaPorte man has been arrested for OWI charges after crashing into the back of a motorcycle and injuring two people.

The collision happened around 8:50 p.m. on Monday, June 3, in the area of State Road 2 and CR 150 East, when a 2006 G.M.C. SUV, driven by Angel Almaraz, 32, was traveling east and crashed into the rear of the eastbound motorcycle.

The 82-year-old Florida man driving the motorcycle and his 73-year-old passenger were ejected. The woman was airlifted to the hospital and later died. The man was taken by ambulance for care.

Almaraz did not sustain any injuries. Deputies say they observed Almaraz to be impaired and he was taken into custody at the scene.

Almaraz was transported to the LaPorte County Jail on the following offenses:
• Operating While Intoxicated – Causing Death, L4 Felony
• Operating While Intoxicated – Causing SBI, Prior Conviction, L4 Felony
• Never Receiving a License – C-Misdemeanor

Almaraz remains housed in the LaPorte County Jail and is being held on a $20,305 cash-only bond through LaPorte County Circuit Court.
