Osceola man arrested after allegedly stabbing man, dog

A man and dog are recovering after being stabbed and the suspect who police say attacked the two is behind bars.

It was late Monday night when St. Joseph County Police were called to the 10000 block of Douglas Road and found a 50-year-old man and a dog suffering from cuts and stab wounds.

The victim told police he was smoking meth with Keith Ball, 37, of Osceola when Ball began stabbing him.

He said the dog bit Ball and likely helped save his life. Ball took off in a vehicle stolen from the home. Police caught up to Ball on Wednesday night.

He faces a slew of charges including attempted murder and mutilation of a vertebrate animal.

St. Joseph County Police released the following information:

On Monday, May 27, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m. Saint Joseph County Police were dispatched to the 10000 block of Douglas Road in St. Joseph County for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located a 50-year-old male victim with multiple cuts, stab wounds, and internal injuries along with a dog also with numerous cuts and stab wounds. According to witnesses, the suspect Keith A. Ball, age 50 of Osceola, ran from the home immediately after the stabbing, then fled in a vehicle stolen from the residence. The stabbing victim later told officers that he and Ball had been sitting in the living room smoking methamphetamine just before Ball stabbed him. The victim also said the dog saved his life by biting Ball and intervening in the attack enough to prevent Ball from killing him. Both the male and the dog stabbing victims are expected to survive their injuries.

Wednesday night May 29, 2024, Ball was found and arrested in Osceola by County Police Officers and is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

Earlier today Keith A. Ball was formally charged in 71D08-2405-F1-000008 with Attempted Murder, a level 1 felony, Aggravated Battery, a level 3 felony, Battery with a Deadly Weapon, a level 5 felony, Auto Theft, a level 6 felony, and Mutilation of a Vertebrate animal, a level 6 felony and is expected to be in court for arraignment on Monday, June 3 at 1:00 pm.
