2-year-old boy in critical condition after being pulled from St. Joseph River

On Wednesday, May 29, at about 12:09 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a child in the St. Joseph River off of Edgewater Blvd. Elkhart Police Department officers and Elkhart Fire Department personnel were dispatched and arrived in the area shortly thereafter.

Initial investigation indicates that the child, a 2-year-old boy, entered the river off of Edgewater Blvd. Family members attempted to rescue the boy, who was carried west down the river. A bystander helped pull the child out of the river near the Edgewater Park boat ramp (near Edgewater Blvd and Okema St. intersection).

At this time, Elkhart Fire Department medics and other first responders arrived, and EFD medics rendered first aid. Medics subsequently transported the child to Elkhart General Hospital for evaluation and treatment. At last information, he was in critical condition, and was transported to Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

During the incident, medics also transported his father to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury sustained in the rescue effort. We will provide further information as we are able to do so.
