A long awaited rail improvement project has been completed in Elkhart.
Patriot Rail began reconstruction work on the first of six rail crossings on back in mid-April at County Road 1.
Crews continued east, reconstructing the crossings at Oak Street, Michigan Street, Edwardsburg Avenue, Cassopolis Street, and finishing, last week, at Prairie Street.
The rail line has long been an main thoroughfare for freight and supplies servicing manufacturers along the route within Elkhart, and these investments will greatly enhance future development opportunities with the City’s Tech Park and Downtown TIF districts.
On Tuesday, the ribbon was cut at the Cassopolis Street crossing, marking the end of the project.

The question is when will Osceola ever get an overpass. Weren’t we supposed to get an update years ago?
I’d like to see it, but they’d have to go with an underpass because of the train yard. That means they’d move Lincolnway back from the tracks and would wipe out the old bank building, the gas station, the church, the street depot, and probably a chunk of the graveyard.
