The avian flu has led to layoffs at Michigan’s largest egg farm

The avian flu outbreak at Michigan’s largest egg farm led to the layoff of 400 workers last week.

It’s the first real impact on the egg industry, though birds in the U.S. have been affected by the bird flu since 2022. State and federal officials are still fighting back against the bird flu, which has been discovered in cattle and hens in the state.

Bridge Michigan reports Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch in Ionia County laid off the workers on Wednesday, two weeks after Michigan declared an “extraordinary animal health emergency.” The virus has also impacted large commercial turkey farms in three Michigan counties.
