Syracuse man killed when vehicle was hit by train

One man is dead after the vehicle he was driving was hit by a train in Northeast Kosciusko County.

It happened just before 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Bishop Road railroad crossing. When emergency personnel arrived, they found that a 2005 Toyota Sequoia had been hit by the train.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Stephen Schmahl of Syracuse, was pronounced dead.

The investigation determined that the Toyota was stopped on the railroad tracks for an unknown reason.

The Sheriff’s Department stated that the railroad intersection emergency lights were activated and the stop arm gates were in the down position.

The crash remains under investigation.
