A 30-year-old man has been charged with burglary, residential entry, auto theft and theft.

Kevin Bergland allegedly stole an acquaintances truck and pet dog earlier this month.

The homeowner, Curtis Skinner, told police that he allowed Bergland to stay at his home the previous night and offered to take him to a homeless shelter, but that Bergland refused to leave.

Skinner called the police, but Bergland left before the police arrived.

Skinner left the home to run some errands, but when he arrived back home around 6:30 p.m. he noticed his truck and dog were missing.

Skinner told police that he had left his truck and home unlocked, but that when he arrived his house was locked and the lights were off.

ABC 57 reports that on February 6, St. Joseph County Police officers responded to a report of an unwanted guest, and when they arrived they found Bergland in the stolen truck with the dog inside.
