A 45-year-old Monticello man was sentenced to 51 months in prison followed by a year of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing unregistered firearms.

Documents say Jeffrey Sredl manufactured multiple destructive devices that functioned as firearms, one which was accidentally discharged and injured a person.

A search warrant at his home also recovered a pipe bomb and five other firearms.

There must be more to this story…there is no firearms registry so basically every firearm is unregistered; it may be serialized but not “registered”. So, what was the crime that garnered 4 1/4 years in prison?

Someone almost died due to his careless behavior, and lack of knowledge on how to properly handle his homemade, unregistered weapon. I am that someone, on June 7th 2022, jeff sredl, a friend of 25plus years, took me out to shoot this weapon. I was very adamant about him showing me how to load, and shoot this weapon, so I could load it myself and learn to shoot it. It was a very simple procedure, and I then shot at targets and such things atleast 30 times, each time loading it myself. We took a break from shooting for about 20 min to walk some trails by a creek that was on the property, as soon as we returned, Jeff loaded that weapon, and proceeded to hand it to me backwards and loaded, with one flinch, it went off, and I was shot, at point blank range, hitting my femoral artery and severing all of my nerves in my shoulder. Jeff hesitated on calling the police, and argued with me about helping me apply pressure to my chest. It’s possible that he may have been in shock, its not everyday that your friend is shot and dying right before your eyes!, my blood was literally spraying all over him. I never went into shock. I remember every second, vividly, and continue to be reminded of it daily. The ambulance finally arrived, and I was immediately lifelined to Lutheran hospital in Fort wayne. Where I underwent 3 blood transfusions, a double bypass, vein transfer surgery, and have 3 stents in my forearm. Between surgeries, permission had to be given to amputate my left arm because it had lost blood pressure for over an hour and a half.i lost 1/3 of the blood in my body, and my body temp went down to 93°. I spent 7 days in ICU, with a 12 inch drainage tube in my chest for the internal bleeding, i was completely wrapped in body warming heated pads, 72 staples on my chest, arm and leg, and a bullet still stuck in my chest. My “friend ” Jeff never once came to the hospital, or even called to the hospital to ask about me…besides the informal details with that, I am lucky to be alive, and I’m lucky that I got to keep my arm, thanks to the wonderful team of surgeons that worked on me. However, I have very limited use of my arm, and no use of my hand, I can’t feel anything, or bend any of my fingers. Everyday for the last year and a half has been a huge struggle, I’ve had to relearn to do everything that you would need both hands for, which is EVERYTHING I used to normally do. Long story a little shorter, I will never be the same, mentally, and physically. So Mr.Sredl’s 4 1/2 yr sentence is mild compared to the life sentence I’ve received in the deal!!! –
