Collectors gun stolen from LaPorte County home in 1992 recovered

A gun stolen from a home in LaPorte County in 1992 has been found is being returned to its rightful owner.

The burglary happened in August 1992 in Springfield Township. In all, 11 firearms that were stolen from the home.

Approximately two-and-a-half weeks later, Detectives made an arrest and recovered the empty gun safe taken from the home, however all the firearms had already been sold.

Last week, one of the firearms surfaced in Chattanooga, Tennessee, some 31 years later.

A gentleman purchased a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver for $1,800 at a gun store.

Tennessee firearms regulators later learned the firearm had been reported as being stolen in the 1992 burglary.

The Chattanooga Police Department responded to the buyer’s house, recovered the firearm, and the gun store refunded the money to the purchaser.

The 1992 burglary victim, who now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, was contacted and told his firearm had been recovered. He was pleased and said the S&W .357 revolver is a collectors edition where only 5,000 were made and selected gun stores that sold them were only given one each to sell.

Detectives will now begin working on acquiring the firearm from the Tennessee authorities and then ensuring it makes it out to Las Vegas to the victim.
