‘New information has been released about the shooting death of a robbery suspect at a South Bend gas station.
On Thursday, Dec. 21, at approximately 12:50 a.m., officers with the South Bend Police Department were dispatched to the Phillips 66 Station in the 4000 block of W. Western Avenue about a robbery.
When they arrived, officers located a person later identified as Glen Brooks, 24 years old, near the gas station.
Brooks was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Violent Crimes Unit was activated to investigate his death.
Officers interviewed several witnesses, including several patrons and the clerk of the Phillips 66.
They advised that a person they did not know (later identified as Brooks) entered the gas station with a handgun and was attempting to rob it at gunpoint.
All of the witnesses stated that Brooks then got into a struggle with the clerk. At that point, an armed concerned citizen interceded on behalf of the station clerk.
During the attempted robbery, the concerned citizen discharged his firearm, striking Brooks, who then fled the gas station and collapsed a short distance away.
Among other evidence collected, the Violent Crimes Unit recovered video from the gas station that confirmed what the witnesses had said.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office was observing the investigation, including the interview and the video of the events.
After reviewing the investigation into this incident, the Prosecutor’s Office has determined that the shooting of Brooks constituted a justifiable homicide and no criminal charges will be filed in connection with his death.
