South Bend 2nd District Council Member Henry Davis Jr. wants the Common Council to wait to pass the 2024 city budget.

He says they should wait until members make room for the LaSalle Park neighborhood and far west side communities.

Davis says there is a great need for discussion with members of the neighborhoods in order to support those communities in the budget.

He says the city has ignored the west side for a long time and that affordable housing is deteriorating without updates on what code enforcement will do about the problems.

On Monday, the South Bend Common Council passed a resolution to form a Reparatory Justice Commission which would create a committee to study the needs of South Bend’s Black community in order to offer the council recommendations on what they find.

I’m a bit confused – aren’t the needs of the Black Community the same as the needs of ALL communities? (e.g. housing, food, safe neighborhoods, employment, quality education, freedom etc…) Just asking for a friend.

“affordable housing is deteriorating without updates on what code enforcement will do about the problems. ”

Apparently the esteemed Drunk Drivin’ Davis has already forgotten what happened last time they sicced Code Enforcement on “affordable” housing. The problems were fixed, but then a $400/month apartment was suddenly a $900/month apartment and people got evicted because they couldn’t afford to live there anymore. Nothing is free.

That dovetails nicely into this whole reparations idea… Nothing is free. It’s not fair that people who were never slaves expect money from people who never owned slaves.

The city’s budget shouldn’t have anything to do with landlords meeting codes. Does Davis think those upgrades should be paid for by the city’s taxpayers instead of the owners?

Give the South Bend city council the Tonya Robinson civic achievement award. How could she steal six million without the connivance of the democratic machine? And the South Bend Tribune has done a good job spiking the story.
