UPDATE: Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood released a statement following the arrest of his son on alleged Operating While Intoxicated charges.
Wood says he’s disappointed and is getting his son the help and resources he needs. Wood also thanked the South Bend Police Department and the staff at the St. Joseph County Jail for their professional response and for operating “by the book.” Joseph Wood was arrested after he crashed his car, Saturday night, in the 900 block of Frances Street.
That collision came nearly a year after he pulled over for alleged drunk driving, but wasn’t arrested.
ORIGINAL STORY: The son of Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The arrest happened after a collision around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 23, in the 900 block of Frances Street in South Bend.
According to police, the vehicle crashed and landed on its side, hit two parked cars.
Joseph Wood suffered minor injuries and, after being treated, was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.
He was released around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday.
The crash comes was pulled over for alleged drunk driving, last fall, but was not arrested in that incident.

It’s a good thing this happened in South Bend. If it happened in Mishawaka, the PD would have just buried it again…
Wood has to go. Even if he didn’t directly order his kid to be given special treatment, he fostered an environment where people thought that would be OK.

By the smirk on his face, he looks confident that the blood test results will get lost, or the testing equipment will be determined unreliable.
