With student loan payments resuming, next month, scammers are lurking.
The Better Business Bureau warns many people with loans are receiving emails, letters and phone calls from someone claiming they are eligible for “student loan consolidation,” “payment reduction program,” or a similar service.
The scammers say the new benefit is part of “the new 2023 guidelines,” and they may even claim to represent the Federal Student Aid department.
If the borrower responds, the scammer will ask for personal information to “confirm your identity” or to “check your eligibility.”
This information might include Social Security numbers, names and addresses, and even FSA.gov login information. But, in the end, the BBB says it’s a scam and you may lose all your money.
