The United Auto Workers are preparing for a limited strike against the Big Three automakers in Detroit on Friday.

On Wednesday, union President Shawn Fain said negotiators were nowhere near reaching an agreement, and ruled out both any extension of the existing four-year deals with GM, Ford, and Stellantis as well as a contract extension while talks continued.

Fain said the initial strike locations would be both limited and targeted, and the details would be passed along to union members Thursday night ahead of the Friday walkout.

The union’s demands have included a 40 percent wage increase over four years, regular cost-of-living adjustments, improved retiree benefits, shorter hours, and end to tiered wages, and pensions for all workers.

Counterproposals from the automakers would have raised wages by about half of what was being requested, and failed to satisfy the other demands.

There are still concerns about a larger-scale strike in the near future, and potential job losses.
