A New York man has been sentenced to a decade in an Indiana prison, following a car crash that killed two people last year.
28-year-old Chasen Thompson was sentenced to 20 years total, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police say he was under the influence of a controlled substance when he crashed on the Indiana Toll Road, killing two people and injuring five more.
After prison, Thompson will face home detention and probation. He must also do community service, pay restitution, and more.
On June 8, 2023, Mr. Thompson signed a plea agreement with the terms as follows:
Count I: Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood, a Level 4 Felony- Eight Years
Count II-: Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood, a Level 4 Felony- Eight Years
Count one and two are to be served consecutively.
Count III-VII- Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Substance in Blood, a Level 5 Felony- Four Years
Counts four through seven, to be served concurrently.
Ten years to be served in IDOC, with the remaining ten to be served as listed below:
- Three years home detention
- Five years reportable probation
- Two years non-reporting probation
- 10 years license suspension
- 250 hours of community service while on probation
- $11,000 restitution
- Any treatment or programs suggested
