A new ranking of U.S. ports places Indiana at the top among inland ports, and #2 for ports on The Great Lakes.
The listing from the US Army Corps of Engineers reports that the Southern Indiana Port District handled 24 million tons on the Ohio River, while the state’s Northern port district brought in 30 million tons on Lake Michigan.
Recent changes to federal port rankings allowed Indiana to move from having multiple small districts to having two top-ranked ports.
Indiana has been in the Top 15 of states for waterborne shipments for many years, but had never ranked this high before now, thanks to the new statistical boundaries.
