Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg calls for stricter freight rail regulations

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is calling for stricter freight rail regulations.
While visiting the site of the toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, Buttigieg says rail companies need to face higher fines and be required to practice higher standards of safety.
He called on Congress to act to hold freight companies accountable for their safety record and urged rail operators to stop fighting federal agencies “tooth and nail” on the rules. He said too often the rail industry gets their way in Washington, noting the Trump administration rolled back both railway and environmental mandates.
His comments were made a day after former President Trump visited the community.
Residents of East Palestine, Ohio remain worried about the impact of the Norfolk Southern train derailment on drinking water, pets, crops, and livestock. The Environmental Protection Agency has been testing the air and water quality continuously since the incident occurred. (clip of resident saying: “We’re still worried about the long-term effects on our community.”)
The EPA has ordered Norfolk Southern to clean up the site of the train derailment in East Palestine or face federal fines and penalties that would more than triple the cost to the company. Pennsylvania and Ohio are also considering criminal charges against the company for potential failures that led to the disaster. (clip of EPA official saying: “Norfolk Southern has been ordered to clean up the site or face federal fines and penalties.”)

Yeah mayor Peter blame Donald Trump for everything on Joe Biden’s watch. Your Transportation Secretary job ends in less than 2 years. Pete you are looking like such an incompetent climbing your way up the political ladder.

Does anyone actually think the rolled back regulations were actually about safety and not control? Look at all the EPA regulations, how many are actually about the environment? How many OSHA regulations really involve safety?

Government regulations are too often tools to keep disruptive upstarts out of a marketplace and to protect the established oligopoly.
