State laws may change in wake of school bus stop tragedy

At least one Indiana State Senator wants to take a look at a law that could help prevent another tragedy like the one that took the lives of three siblings in the Tippecanoe Valley school district.

Indiana does not have a requirement for school buses to pick kids up on the right side of the street.

Other states have discussed similar legislation since a study at Iowa State University, after a 7-year-old Iowa student was killed crossing the street to get to her school bus.

That study suggested it could be done for most districts but would cost them more money. State Senator Randy Head, who represents Fulton County, wants the possibility to at least be explored after the investigation is concluded.

Weather caused the cancellation of Thursday night’s vigil for the three students who died this week, and will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Mentone Youth League.

Laws don’t stop idiocy. Responsibility for ones actions does. We have plenty of laws on the books…enforce them. The problem is that our laws are numerous and empty, no one cares. Make them few and enforceable and they will care.
