Vice President Mike Pence arrives in South Bend, Notre Dame commencement delayed

Air Force Two landed at South Bend International Airport at about 5:50 p.m. Saturday ahead of Vice President Mike Pence’s commencement address at the University of Notre Dame Sunday.

Pence’s speech will have to wait a little bit, though. Due to this weekend’s rainy weather, Sunday’s festivities at Notre Dame Stadium has been pushed back an hour, according to university officials.

Graduates will gather now at 8:15 a.m. and will start the Academic Procession at 10 a.m. The ceremony itself begins at 10:30 a.m.

Some students plan a silent protest during Pence’s speech, unhappy with his stances on issues like LGBTs and abortion dating back to his time as Indiana’s Governor.

In addition to Pence’s speech, Homeboy Industries founder the Rev. Gregory J. Boyle will receive the prestigious Laetare Medal for his work in gang intervention. This year’s Valedictorian, Arabic and Peace Studies major Caleb Pine, will also speak.
