An Elkhart woman has died and a 14-year-old boy will now be charged with reckless homicide.

Teketa Hixson, 34, was declared braindead Thursday night and was kept on life support until organ donations could be secured, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours Thursday on the 200 block of Park Ave. The teenage boy fired shots into the house while standing on Chester St. Several others in the house were not hurt, according to police.

It’s unknown at this point whether the 14-year-old will be tried as a juvenile or an adult going forward. He’s still in custody at the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Hixson is the 15th homicide victim in Elkhart this year and 19th in Elkhart County.
