St. Joseph man causes power outages after crashing into pole

Indiana Michigan Power responded to an outage in St. Joseph, Michigan Thursday morning.

More than 500 customers were in the dark after a car crash in the 500 block of Glenlord Road.

An elderly drunk driver ran into the pole and caused the wires and transformer to catch fire, according to Lincoln Township Police.

The driver, identified by police as 72-year-old Thomas Zabadel of St. Joseph, suffered “very minor injuries”, but failed a sobriety test after being helped from the vehicle. Zabadel was charged with Operating While Intoxicated and was arrested.

The outage also had an impact on Upton Middle School, Grace Lutheran, and the Lighthouse Education Center.
