Nearly 3 dozen gang members indicted in Chicago area

CHICAGO (AP) — Nearly three dozen Chicago-area gang members have been indicted in an alleged racketeering conspiracy that includes arson, extortion and the attempted killing of a police officer.

The indictments unsealed Tuesday say the gang operated across Chicago and nearby suburbs in Illinois and Indiana. The indictments name 34 individuals, including high-ranking gang leaders. Two other alleged gang members are facing separate charges.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many of the suspects have been arrested, but several are due in federal court this week.

A racketeering conspiracy conviction normally carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. But a life sentence can be imposed if murder or other violent crimes underpin the conspiracy.
